Our patron saint

FeaturedPublished April 30, 2010 at 10:37 pm No Comments

Biggest number of new signatories ever on a single day* following Steve Jobs’ “Thoughts on Flash”!
Things should “just work”, “magically”, you see.  After the weasel words our readers are still saying “just make it friggin’ work, Steve”.
Apple-lovers stumble upon this site through google to complain: read their stories and multiply (oh, and sign our petition).  Apple

My thoughts on Jobs thoughts on Flash

iPad-Flash NewsPublished April 29, 2010 at 9:30 pm No Comments

- Steve Jobs has personally posted his thoughts on flash.  He’s defensive!  In decades of following Apple, I can’t recall him communicating this way before.  His public persona has been the turtle neck guy with the cool device to show off.  Obviously feeling vulnerable about flash, and backing off the aggressive trash talk.   If

Gruber Canvasmol example… how fast does your frame rate drop?

iPad-Flash NewsPublished April 25, 2010 at 9:06 pm No Comments

John Gruber from Daring Fireball posted a link to canvasmol, an example of HTML5 canvas animation.   It is a very beautiful animation that is hard to do in flash, and it is impressive.  However after opening 6 molecules the frame rates started to stutter visibly on my machine.  Complex atoms such as Adenovirus would

iPad for education? I don’t think so

iPad-Flash NewsPublished April 20, 2010 at 1:53 am 8 Comments

The news that various US universities have banned the iPad for technical reasons is an embarassment for Apple, but that problem will be temporary.   There are larger problems with iPad’s suitability for education purposes:
- For primary aged kids, non-access to Flash is a real problem, given the number of free, quality flash educational sites

Win 95 on iPad: worse than death

FeaturedPublished April 12, 2010 at 11:11 pm No Comments

Blend it, hit it with a baseball bat rather than this!  We at Flash4ipad could arguably be accused of wishing ill to Apple’s iPad.  But even we, even probably Cory Doctorow would draw the line at running windows 95 on it (assuming this is for real). Even if it will allow you to play Farmville;

iPad: the best of Apple, and the worst of Apple…

iPad-Flash NewsPublished April 12, 2010 at 8:11 pm No Comments

The iPad is often described as a polarising product. David Pogue did a smart, deliberately schitzo review for it, the theme being the head/heart dichotomy (“techies” and “others”).  Viewed rationally: issues everywhere. Emotionally: love at first sight.  For me, it is not that clear, I’m conflicted on an emotional AND rational level.

NYT iPad ready/not ready – iPad feature?!

Featured Great FlashPublished April 12, 2010 at 8:03 am No Comments

The “iPad ready” (according to Apple) New York Times website features a beautiful exploded interactive illustration of the iPad … in flash!  It can’t be viewed on iPad.   Arrgh… you’re messing with our heads, NYT!

Not iPad-ready: ebay

Featured Great FlashPublished April 10, 2010 at 9:24 am 4 Comments

Be inspired…NOT. Ebay on iPad – you see a big white space on the home page!  There is of course, an easy solution for ebay: buy an iAd (Apple revenue cut – 40%).

Update: as of 21 April ebay have released a highly regarded iPad-specific App, to bridge the gap between the Flash-broken web version and

iPad v1: broken-by-design

Featured iPad-Flash NewsPublished April 9, 2010 at 11:33 pm 7 Comments

Rumour today that the levels of buyers remorse and returns on the iPad are unusually high.
Another commentator has found obvious evidence that Apple have designed the iPad hardware and software to take a camera.
Apple’s obsessive need to control the iPad makes the workflow for word processing etc. on it all but impossible, a combination of the

Apple vs. Adobe – the gloves are off, time to refocus.

iPad-Flash NewsPublished April 9, 2010 at 7:02 am No Comments

Today Apple undermined Adobe’s new Flash product that would allow developers to use the Flash environment to produce iPhone and iPad apps.  Steve Jobs confirmed explicitly, when launching the iPhone software v4 that it will not support flash, and it seems most likely that however badly the iPad sells, flash will never be allowed on

The most Apple computer ever

iPad-Flash NewsPublished April 7, 2010 at 9:27 pm No Comments

The last article on these pages expressed the fear that, with all the criticism out there, the iPad might turn out to be another Newton (Apple’s brilliant, ahead of its time, failed, handheld of the 90’s)
S0 this is the “on the other hand…” article.
If one could dissect Steve Job’s brain, a good deal of it

Hope for playing Farmville on iPhone and iPad

FeaturedPublished April 7, 2010 at 7:21 am 1 Comment

There is an app for iPad and iPhone called teleport that allows you to access your desktop screen through the mobile device via internet.  This could include a browser running farmville.  Apparently it takes a bit of getting used to, but for all you desperate Farmville addicts out there, that want to play Farmville on

Some buyers remorse… say it ain’t Newton!

Featured iPad-Flash NewsPublished April 6, 2010 at 11:17 pm 1 Comment

I’d love an iPad, but some of the buyer’s remorse around the internet is sounding decidedly Newtonish.  You know, the Apple device people could see was cool, but no one quite had a use for:
“people’s reactions to my MessagePad generally depend on whether they see it as a ‘big Pilot’ or a ’small laptop.’”
“As might

iPhone OS: the last proprietary platform?

iPad-Flash NewsPublished April 6, 2010 at 9:08 pm 3 Comments

One of my favourite quotes of 2009 was “the web devalues everything it touches”.  It refers to the consumer expectation that on the web, things should be free.  Music, video and print vendors know the principle too well. Chrome, the OS being developed by Google, is the future.  It pushes to the web virtually everything you

Analysts: Lack of Flash the prime iPad sales weakness

iPad-Flash NewsPublished April 3, 2010 at 9:43 pm No Comments

Analysts agree that iPad sales are likely to soar, however they nominate lack of flash as the number one limiting factor
“Until Apple addresses this issue one way or another, its decision not to support Flash … will have a limiting effect on the iPad’s sales potential,”
Hopefully, as with iPod sales will get to a certain

Not on iPad: google analytics

Featured Great FlashPublished April 2, 2010 at 8:05 pm 1 Comment

The visualisations in Google’s popular analytics tool are rendered in Flash, so if this is important to you don’t count on an iPad to access them!

iPad-ready? Not really.

Featured iPad-Flash NewsPublished April 1, 2010 at 9:46 pm 4 Comments

Nice try Apple, but the approved list of “iPad ready” sites are still full of holes where flash should be, because Flash does a whole lot more than just play video. As for the rest of the internet, as David Pogue experienced: “thousands of Web sites show up with empty white squares on the iPad —

iPad love: of course it is brilliant…

Featured iPad-Flash NewsPublished April 1, 2010 at 6:27 am No Comments

The first iPad reviews are in from the traditional Apple chosen ones (pogue, mossberg, ihnatko et al) as the iPad juggernaut follows apples patented hype template.  We’ve never doubted the thing will be brilliant, and that actually using it, everything would make sense.  My favourite lines: “one of the best computers ever” “elegant, satisfying” “profoundly different”
