Featured iPad-Flash NewsPublished March 31, 2010 at 7:24 pm 2 Comments

Flash 10.1 consistently outperforms Canvas in frame rates, particularly on android in this impressive video demonstration.  iPhone performance can’t be measured for Flash obviously, but Canvas performance is dire, worse than Android.

Apps vs Flash vs HTML5… complex path forward

iPad-Flash NewsPublished March 29, 2010 at 11:39 pm No Comments

Interesting Wired article speculates that the App store will eventually lose its bite as HTML5 becomes more competent, and as mobile platforms abound.
In feedback a commenter asked why you would make a free web app when you could make a paid App store app. Some reasons are:
- Apple approval not needed
- Apple arbitrary withdrawal not

Flash + HTML5 in parallel – messy for the foreseeable future

iPad-Flash NewsPublished March 29, 2010 at 7:31 pm No Comments

The cheering of HTML5 boosters over the death of Flash is premature, and masks the reality that the web just got messier.  Advertisers are at a loss, because there is no obvious substitute for Flash ads.  Flash outputs as a neat closed box, with scripting inside it that can run an ad, offer interaction and

Web publishers feel the effects of iPad Flash ban

iPad-Flash NewsPublished March 28, 2010 at 9:06 am No Comments

People power against Flash may have fizzled so far (pre-launch of the iPad) but it sounds like some web publishers are down right grumpy with Apple for messing with the web.  Its fine for Steve to move on from Flash, but breaking the ease of development and ubiquity of Flash means lost dollars for these

Stop playing tricks Apple, just be insanely great

iPad-Flash NewsPublished March 26, 2010 at 10:26 pm 1 Comment

Francisco Kattan, who worked at Adobe, argues that Apple will never allow Flash on iPad because Flash undermines the App store’s ability to differentiate the iPad as a device.  Its a really good point.  So do we give up petitioning Apple to relent and allow Flash?
Business is the underlying issue – if Flash stops the

Apple and the open society

iPad-Flash NewsPublished March 23, 2010 at 8:15 pm No Comments

In a somewhat wordy article, “Open societies need open systems” BBC commentator Bill Thompson expresses why I think Apple in their current mode need to be saved from themselves.  He reviews both Amazon and Apple’s high handed dealings and concludes:
“Apple and Amazon, like the priests of Marx’s day, no doubt sincerely believe that the world

iPad: hit or “hobby”?

iPad-Flash NewsPublished March 21, 2010 at 7:51 pm No Comments

A gaming betting site has, it seems, equal odds for iPad to sell, during 2010 between 3-4 million or over 6 million.  At 3 million, that would be roughly “hobby” level, according to estimates of Apple TV sales, which are too embarrassing for Apple to mention in public. They must surely be hoping for more

Two interesting Wall Street Journal articles

iPad-Flash NewsPublished March 19, 2010 at 2:18 am No Comments

The first article is about how Apple is apparently struggling to get the content deals it wanted for the iPad, and scaling back its plans for the device, despite strong initial pre-sales.   Flash is a factor here:
“Some publishers and TV executives are concerned the iPad doesn’t support Adobe SystemsInc.’s Flash video technology, which many publishers

Support/demand iPad with flash: 47%
Not interested in iPad/makes no difference: 31%
Don’t want flash on iPad: 22%

These are Ars Technica readers, the very sort most likely, I would have thought, to loathe
